It’ll search the hard disk for bad sectors and system errors and repair them for faster performance. * Follow Start > My Computer * In My Computer right-click the hard disk you want to scan and click Properties* Click the Tools tab * Click Check Now * Select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box * Click Start 3. Disable Indexing ServicesIndexing Services is a little application that uses a lot of CPU. By indexing and updating lists of all the files on the computer, it helps you to do a search for something faster as it scans the index list. But if you know where your files are, you can disable this system service. It won’t do any harm to you machine, whether you search often or not very often. * Go to Start * Click Settings * Click Control Panel * Double-click Add/Remove Programs * Click the Add/Remove Window Components * Uncheck the Indexing services * Click Next 4. Optimize Display Settings Windows XP is a looker. But it costs you system resources that are used to display all the visual items and effects. Windows looks fine if you disable most of the settings and leave the following: * Show shadows under menus * Show shadows under mouse pointer * Show translucent selection rectangle * Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop * Use visual styles on windows and buttons 6. Disable Performance Counters Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea. * Download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List (http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/exctrlst-o.asp) * Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom button below 7. Optimize Your Pagefile You can optimize your pagefile. Setting a fixed size to your pagefile saves the operating system from the need to resize the pagefile. * Right click on My Computer and select Properties * Select the Advanced tab * Under Performance choose the Settings button * Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change * Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file. 8. Remove Fonts for Speed Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require. * Open Control Panel * Open Fonts folder * Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain. 9. Use a Flash Memory to Boost Performance To improve performance, you need to install additional RAM memory. It’ll let you boot your OS much quicker and run many applications and access data quicker. There is no easiest and more technically elegant way to do it than use eBoostr (http://www.eboostr.com). eBoostr is a little program that lets you improve a performance of any computer, powered by Windows XP in much the same way as Vista’s ReadyBoost. With eBoostr, if you have a flash drive, such as a USB flash thumb drive or an SD card, you can use it to make your computer run better. Simply plug in a flash drive through a USB socket and Windows XP will use eBoostr to utilize the flash memory to improve performance. All it takes is a couple of easy to follow tips to ignite your PC's performance to full speed again.Just follow these easy to follow steps: System configuration utilityEven when your computer's sat there doing nothing it could be running at least 50 programs! These are programs that a munching away at your poor old CPU and not to mention having a right good go at your memory as well. The reason for this is because over time the more stuff you install the more crap that builds up and even if you don't even use that program, there's a damn good chance that it's running in the background.To see what I mean hit CTRL +ALT + DELETE then press the processes tab. It will show you how many processes that are running in the background.1. To solve this little dilemma just go the Start or Run for XP owners, and type MSCONFIG.2. The System configuration will appear and from in there go to the STARTUP tab.3. Once you've selected the STARTUP tab you'll be presented all the programs that are running in the background of your PC. What I would recommend is turning everything off apart from your anti virus.If you do see anything what you do want on for example MSN massager by all means keep it on but the more you have running in the background the more it'll sap your PC's performance and will also affect you're your Boot times as well.System configuration utility part 2Now still hanging around in the System Configuration Utility, go to the second tab called SERVICES and go to and untick the HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES. We've got to do this (unless you're a bit more experienced) because if you go and turn one of Microsoft's services you could just mess your entire PC up and we don't want that do we.Once you've unticked the box you should be just left with all the non Microsoft services.once again I would recommend to turn them all off but the anti viruses services. Once you've decided what and what not gets the chop click apply and you're done.Performance OptionsDepending on which OS (operating system) your using, this could make or brake it. If your using Windows Vista? I would recommend turning some the visual effects of especially on the lower end systems. However if your using XP, the performance will be less impressive but I believe every ounce of performance is crucial. Besides, you won't even notice half of these switched of anyway.Now as much as I would love to tell you how to get to these options, the ways to get there are very different when compared to Vista and XP. So a way around this (and probably a cop out as well) I'll just tell the vista owners to type in PERFORMANCE into the search bar, select PERFORMANCE INFORMATION AND TOOLS and click ADJUST VISUAL EFFECTS and you'll find your way there.For XP owners read on: 1. Go to Start, Control Panel and select PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE.2. Then ADJUST VISUAL EFFECTS you should find yourself there.Now I would recommend turning them all off barring the last one. The last one keeps the modern Windows feel which I personally like but hay, everyone's different.UninstallingA fast Hardrive is a empty hardrive. So if you've got an hardrive full to the brim, delete the programs and games you don't need to speed up your Hardrive and watch those boot times fly!Tip: If you're a gamer (like me) What you can do is save the save game file and uninstall the full game. This way you can get the wanted gigs of space back but not lose your place on Crysis. Cool eh.DefraggingNow there's hundreds of other tips I wanted to share with you but I wanted to keep this article as short as possible to prevent you been bord to death. but the ver last thing I would do to my PC once I finish optimizing it is to defrag it.Now your probably thinking that yes I already know that James. But what I would recommend doing is using a different defragger especially if your using the dreaded Vista defragged.Now as you've probably gathered, I can't stand Vista's defragger, I think it's actually a step backwards, not a step forward. But what really annoys me about it is that you have no idea how long it will takes and how defragmented your hardrive is.But don't worry, because I'm going to show you to download a much better one that Vista's own shoddy attempt. Auslogics Disk defragger is its name and I think you'll find it quick and easy to use and it seems to do quite a good job as well.And another thing.. It's completely free to download as well. Just Google "Auslogics Disk defragger" and you should find it in no time.Iobit is another company that offers very good freeware smartdefrag is an excellentprogram to defrag your pc and is very fast and can defrag boot up files and also has a autodefrag option.

But wireless technology and Bluetooth in particular stretches much further than that. Your mobile phone if a recent one will probably have Bluetooth technology built into it. Plus should you wish to move your computer at anytime, you don't have to re-route the wires connecting your network together. Security on Wireless networks is set by adding a name for your network which all computers on that network must be assigned to connect to, plus then you can add a password to keep unwanted intruders out from your files. Software firewalls are also recommended on wireless connections (as well as wired) just for added security against unwanted virus' or Adware/Spyware.Wireless Headphones / MicrophoneWireless headphones are readily available from many manufacturers. These are really one of the most practical uses of wireless technology behind the networking. However, it is no big deal to get an understanding about what it is, how it works and how it compares to your other choices for getting high speed internet access.Faster and faster dialup telephone modems were all the rage, until DSL and cable modems came about. Computer Shuts Down is Not a Power Supply Problem

Sometimes a computer that is shutting down after every restart is not a power supply problem. First let me give you the computer specs The computer was a custom build that I did and is about 5 years old its motherboard is a ASRock K8NFG-SATA2 a socket 754 with an AMD Altlon 2.4 Gigahertz I believe.I was doing a normal install of XP pro and yes I still use it because I like XP,I was almost finished with the updates maybe a little under 200 or so,then I noticedthere was a few Hardware driver updates listed on the windows update site,usually I stay away from driver updates from here because of compatability problems with different pcs, yet one of them was for the AMD processor so I thought this must be allright to install.The updates were finished with this AMD processor update so I shut the computer down when all updates were finished, when I restarted the computer in the mourning it would get to just before windows loads and shut down it did this a few times before I decidedto check the bios settings in the motherboard, for a quick shot at fixing a related driver problem that this update could have done I went to one of the top tabs then setting the motherboard back to Optimum Settings, did a restart and checked to see ifwindows would load all the way and it did.On this ASROCK K8NF4G-SATA2 it was the f2 key that puts you in to the bios settingssometimes it is a good idea to check the bios settings or to revert them to the optimumsettings then save it and do a restart.

Repair Your Own Hard Drive Problem

Since computer users are human, the user can be the primary cause of computer failure. And we operators of our computers are in most cases but that, we operate the computer but know very little concerning software and hardware components and peripherals.

Since this is the case, you should ASSUME NOTHING when diagnosing any computer problem. We diagnosed a new PC with a video display problem. After briefly looking at the video card it took a while to see that the video card was not pushed into the adapter slot completely.

Even though I looked at the card, I failed to check it thoroughly. This cause me to spend more time on troubleshooting that was not needed.The thought of a hard drive failure strikes terror in the heart of every computer user.

This is because a hard drive failure may lead to invaluable data loss. Here are the most common procedures you should perform when you experience hard drive failure.

General Hard Drive Troubleshooting

The hard drive can display problems such as "retry, abort, ignore" or "cannot read sectors" while operating. This is an indication that there may be bad or unreadable spots on the drive. Reformatting and reinstalling the operating system can normally correct this problem. This will cause you to loose all data on your drive so it is important to always have a good backup of yourfiles daily.

There are good good utilities you can purchase that can repair hard drive problems without destroying data. The utility Spinrite is a good utility and only cost a little over $100.00 which is a good price if you want to avoid the hassle of reformatting the drive and restoring the operating system. Here are some general hard drive problems you should start from and we'll be more specific later.

Use Operating System Utilities

First you may be able to correct those bad spots and errors from your hard drive by performing those PC maintenance in the operating system. Windows has Disk Defragment and you should run disk defragment after running Scandisk since scandisk will need to fix any problems it finds. After scanning the drive and defraging the files, run Disk Cleanup to ensure all junk files have been delete.

Check Drive cables and connections

If there is on indication that the drive is receiving power (you don't hear that familiar clicking noise or the drive light is no working) check the 4 wire connector coming from the power supply.

If the connection is secure, you can remove the power supply connector and do two things. You can check to see if there is voltage with a multimeter. But its much faster to connect another 4 wire connector to the drive to see if the drive works. There are normally extra connectors from the power supply or you can use the connection to the cdrom drive to test for voltage from the power supply.

If the connection indicates no or very little voltage (4 volts or less) from the power supply, the power supply may be going bad. Now check and double check all connections, especially if you are someone else have recently worked inside the computer.

If the drive will not boot up...?

Boot the computer with your bootable DOS disk. If you don't have one made, STOP and make one NOW by clicking on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs and Startup Disk.

Try to access drive C: by typing DIR C: and press Enter. If you see the directories on drive C: try to make the drive bootable by typing sys a: c: and press Enter. The system files should be restored and the drive may be restored to boot on its own.

If this fails, you may have to reformat and partition the drive with the setup utility that came with your drive or computer.

If the Drive boots but hangs up at boot...?

Turn the computer off, open the system unit and disconnect the ribbon cable at the motherboard end. Turn on the PC AND You will get an error message that the drive is bad and in most cases will go into your BIOS. Change the hard drive type to AUTO and shut off the computer.

Reconnect the ribbon cable and see if the hard works properly. The drive settings should be restored and should operate fine.

A hard drive that fails to boot up may also have a bad controller. If the controller is mounted on the hard drive, there is not much you can do except replace the drive.

Sometimes a computer behaves rather strangely and its source is not Malware! but, driver problems instead.
Fixing these problems can be hard to pinpoint,but the way I do it is simply rule the hardware out one by one by checking the driver dates on the main hardware first then start with the major items like the video card.

Most versions of windows there is a shortcut to the device driver right click with your mouse on my computer,then click on properties then left click on hardware button then on to device manager.
Now that you are in device manager look under display adapters first,then go to the video card name then go down the menu and left click properties here you will be on the driver properties showing at top from left to right first will be the general tab then driver then details then resources, then click on driver this will show the date,if its older then a year go to the manufacturers site of the motherboard or the video card makers site.

Video cards that are the most common are ones from ATI which is owned by AMD now and Nvidia if you have either one of these go to there site to get your update, you have to select by model series say radion 4800 then you select the operating system you have try to get WHQL tested drivers these are ones that are certified to work correctly on windows o/s.

The next hardware driver that can cause strange problems is your sound card, this driver is usually built in to your motherboard unless you installed one or it had a card in it,to check look in the back of your computer if its a desktop unit and see if your speaker connection are horizontal to the backof the computer or vertical, if its vertical its on-board sound or built in so go to the motherboard manufactures site and check for driver updates.

Network cards can cause problems also sometimes its a driver update from windows itself that causes a problem then if it is you can try rolling back your drivers to see if it fixes the issues.

There are quite a few ways to get pictures from a phone camera, the number one way and the the one that is really easy is to do, is pulling them from the micro sd card, if your phone camera has one.
How to find out if your phone camera has a micro sd slot! look around the phone it may be on the top bottom or the sides, its a small slot about 3/4 of an inch wide and 9/16 long,if its not around the phone check on the inside beside the battery.

If the micro sd card slot is not beside or around the battery or around the phone you do not have one.

When Computer CD drives Eject On Their Own

When a computer starts ejecting its cd or dvd drive( Hp Model Pavillion 520 N its usually a virus thats attached itself in the registry hardware profiles,or a bad drive itself or and bad IDE ribbon cable. In this case or computer,that I worked on 08-18-2011 its both I found that the drives were bad and the IDE ribbon cable,the pavillion 520m had a duel combination dvd and cd in a strange setup the first drive a cd writer was set at cable select on the jumper, the second drive was set at slave.

The way I usually set these up is with the jumpers on the back of the drive- Master The second drive set as the slave. The ribbon cables come in 40 pin and 80 to make this short the 80 is better so I changed the 40 pin cable also with a 80.

The other strange behavior of this bad drive cable combo was when you did manage to get a cd in and try to open it under my computer it would tell you to insert a disk although one was indeed inserted already. So when you get strange behavior like this from your computer especially if its a hp pavillion 520n It may be a computer hardware problem.

Okay it's time to talk about motherboards. Now I get the impression that motherboards scare a lot of people in this field, you know people don't want to deal with them or replace them or try to fix them. It's a little daunting to try to diagnose the motherboard it might seem, but what I'm going tell you is it's pretty easy. Here's four main symptoms that could go wrong with the motherboard and they are:

Four symptoms of a bad motherboard:

1. Computer won't turn on
2. Components won't work
3. Computer shuts down randomly
4. Computer acts abnormally

Number one, the laptop won't power on.
Two, components in the laptop are not working malfunctioning.
Three, the computer shuts down randomly.
And four, the computer acts abnormally.

Now, we are going with these symptoms one by one. There could be more symptoms but these are the ones that I've found in my experiences. Now number one, computer won't power on. We got a laptop that doesn't power on. How can you tell if the motherboard is bad? Well, you just ask yourself why else wouldn't a computer power on? Number one, if it's on battery power, the battery is dead or the battery is bad and number two the AC adapter could be bad, so let's roll out number one.

Pull the battery out, keep the battery out of the computer for this test and then take your AC adapter and check the voltage with the voltmeter and I'm going show you how to do that right here. Take a voltmeter and what you want to test for is voltage. Put the meter at 20 volts DC and take the tip, the power jack tip. You hold your black, your negative on the outside of the tip and you put the red in the hole in the inside of the tip. Be very careful not to touch the red and the black and the tips together, otherwise it will create a short circuit. After doing these things, be sure you have 19 volts DC or just about 19 volts DC registered on your multimeter so we can know that the power adapter works. Now, just to make sure the connections is tight, kinda bend the power cord a little bit and make sure that the registered 19 volts DC on the multimeter or voltmeter will not fluctuate or move when you bend the power adapter cord a little. Okay if you're still getting 19 volts DC when bending the power adapter cord, jiggle the power adapter cord a little bit around make sure that there's no crimson wire. Now, after you bend the power adapter cord and jiggle it and you still have 19 volts registered on your multimeter, then the power adapter tip is probably good. A lot of time you know the tip will break, great in this area here, and you wouldn't get that 19 volts DC after you do that, after it's broken. So instead of just taking the whole computer apart and finding out if the laptop has appropriately good power jack, test the power adapter first.

Now another reason a motherboard might not turned on is because it's not getting power to the power jack. Power jack might be damaged, so absorb what you can from the outside and see if it's the power jack is loose or detached from the motherboard and if it is then you know you have to replace the power jack probably, but if it looks like it's secure the only way we we're gonna be able to test the power jack is to get down to the motherboard level and look it where the power jack is soldered on to the motherboard and this I cover in many of the case study videos.

Other things that may cause a laptop motherboard not to power on...

Now there's a few other things that might cause a motherboard not to turn on or computer not to turn on, it could have a bad processor, but bad processor are fairly rare I would say 1 out of 75 computers are working on, it's the processor rather than the motherboard that's bad and also there's like maybe the power button on the actual laptop is broken or something mechanical like that, but again that's unlikely but you could check those things too.

2. Components won't work

Okay number two, components on a laptop won't work. For example, a CD drive or a wireless card don't show up in windows. Whether not working properly, well that could possibly be a motherboard but the way to test that is to replace that component. If your CD drive is not working replace the CD drive if it's still not working maybe the CD drive controller or the motherboard is bad. I've had that happened on a couple Toshiba laptops I worked on. I've bought a brand new CD drive put it in, still not working, still wasn't recognized by the BIOS and it was a bad motherboard. Now HP, I also had a problem of their wireless card but it wasn't the wireless cards that were bad it was the actual controller on the motherboard, that controls the card that was bad. I think it was positioned next to a chip that got real hot like the graphics chip or something like that, on the motherboard. So if you have a laptop with components not working, you replace the components and they're still not working then you might have a bad motherboard. Now how do you roll out if windows isn't causing this problem or the operating system's not causing the problem. Well, test it with a different operating systems. This is always a good test of the motherboard using like Linux distribution like knoppix or using the Ultimate Boot CD for windows. These are both bootable CD's and it's essentially testing the hardware of a laptop because you're running it on a different operating systems. Last thing to try if components aren't working and you suspect is your motherboard. Flash the bios of the motherboard, maybe the BIOS got corrupted somehow, and since the BIOS is like handles the basic functions of a computer, maybe it's not doing it's job and causing some abnormal activity in the computer.

3. Computer shuts down randomly

Okay number three, laptop shuts down randomly. Now this is a common symptom of a laptop overheating. So let's make sure it's not an overheating problem and how do we do that? Well, what I do is I take a can of compressed air and I blow it in the laptop, in the bottom where the fan is and also in the heat sink, on the side of the computer. If you do this you might see clouds of dust come out and that's a good thing that you want to make sure you get all the chunks out of the laptop before you turned it back on, because those chunks of dust that might still be stuck in there, might cause the fan blades to actually stick. I go over this in the case study videos several of them. Watch how I do that there and you can see in action you know cleaning out laptop, getting old dust out of it. Now, once you get the dust out of a laptop and you're sure that the fan is spinning and the airways are clean, if the computer keeps shutting down after this, you can be very sure that's not the CPU overheating that's causing the problem but the problem with the motherboard. I had systems where I opened them up I make sure all the airways were clean, I make sure that the heat sink was making a good connection with the processor, put it all back together and the computer still power down. It turned out it was a bad motherboard

4. Computer acts abnormally

Okay number 4, the computer or the laptop acts abnormally. It blue screens, things aren't working the way they're suppose to, it doesn't boot up every time, it doesn't boot up at all sometimes. Now, first I want to make sure it's not Windows that causing a problem. So again we're not going to deal to much for the software sides to do all your Windows fixes and make sure Windows isn't causing the problem or like I said before, just run knoppix which is a good Linux distribution, the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows which is also great and then you'll know Windows isn't the thing that's causing the problem then. If you're still having problems with the computer acting abnormally, start taking out components one by one. Take the hard drive out, you could do that if you're running it from a live Linux distribution. Take the ram out, replace the ram maybe with the stick around that you know is good that you have around in the shop, take the wireless card out take the CD drive out. Start taking components out one by one and get the motherboard down to basics like CPU, one stick of ram, motherboard and power, and hook up the screen, and just make sure that it goes on. But break it down to basics so you're sure that it's not a component that's causing the problem. So once you have it of broken down to basics and you're sure windows isn't causing the problem, then it's probably a bad motherboard. Okay it's a bad motherboard.
Now, you need to buy a motherboard. Where do I buy my motherboards? you guessed it, on eBay. Oh I love buying on eBay coz you got a great selection. You go buy from multiple sellers, usually you get the best price. Now, the way to search on eBay for motherboard is first try to get the model no. of the motherboard itself. If you can, if you have access to the motherboard you're already took the computer apart, get the model of the motherboard and research for that motherboard. If you're not at that point, then you still need to order the motherboard. You could type in the model no. of the computer you got the motherboard out of it and do a search that way. Like let's say, if it's a Compact M2000, just type on eBay Compact M2000 motherboard and do a search like that. The problem with doing a search like that though is, for example, HP's have like a DV6000 model but there's actually like a hundred different sub models in the DV6000 series and some of them have different motherboards than each other. Like say, there's a DV6310US or DV6425 so that's when you have a computer like that it's a little dangerous to search for a motherboard just by model no. of the computer alone. I've got burn on that many times myself and so it's best just to pull the motherboard out and look on the motherboard and get the model of the motherboard and do a search to buy one using the model no. of the motherboard

DDR (Double Data Rate SDRAM)
DDR basically doubles the rate of data transfer of standard SDRAM by transferring data on the up and down tick of a clock cycle. DDR memory operating at 333MHz actually operates at 166MHz * 2 (aka PC333 / PC2700) or 133MHz*2 (PC266 / PC2100). DDR is a 2.5 volt technology that uses 184 pins in its DIMMs. It is incompatible with SDRAM physically, but uses a similar parallel bus, making it easier to implement than RDRAM, which is a different technology.

Rambus DRAM (RDRAM)

There are only two methods that I know of to be free of virus infection and all the other bad stuff, 1- Use Linux or 2- don't go online with your windows machine!
Linux is getting better all the time plus its faster then windows and much more secure.

Hackers and virus writers, like to stay with an O/S that has multiple security holes
to punch through. Linux has many versions with some being very easy to use and with
very good multimedia support with certain download versions.

My top choices for Linux these days are 1- SuperOS 2- Zorin3 3- LinuxMint
Most are what are called Live cds or dvds which means you can try them by booting up your computer with the cd or dvd in the drive.

You will have two choices to get your cd or dvd the free way download the ISO
and burn with a image burning program like imageburn, then reboot with the disk
and try it out, or buy the cd or dvd and have it shipped to you.

Sometimes a virus will find its way deep into our PC system that it boots past our normal bios setup screen when this happens your cmos is infected to some degree.
Other ways to see the infection is time is off but this can be caused by a low cmos battery a button battery of size CR2032 which can be replaced easily.
