Repair Your Own Hard Drive Problem

Since computer users are human, the user can be the primary cause of computer failure. And we operators of our computers are in most cases but that, we operate the computer but know very little concerning software and hardware components and peripherals.

Since this is the case, you should ASSUME NOTHING when diagnosing any computer problem. We diagnosed a new PC with a video display problem. After briefly looking at the video card it took a while to see that the video card was not pushed into the adaptor slot completely.

Even though I looked at the card, I failed to check it thoroughly. This cause me to spend more time on troubleshooting that was not needed. The thought of a hard drive failure strikes terror in the heart of every computer user.

This is because a hard drive failure may lead to invaluable data loss. Here are the most common procedures you should perform when you experience hard drive failure.

General Hard Drive Troubleshooting

The hard drive can display problems such as "retry, abort, ignore" or "cannot read sectors" while operating. This is an indication that there may be bad or unreadable spots on the drive. Reformatting and reinstalling the operating system can normally correct this problem. This will cause you to loose all data on your drive so it is important to always have a good backup of yourfiles daily.

There are good good utilities you can purchase that can repair hard drive problems without destroying data. The utility Spinrite is a good utility and only cost a little over $100.00 which is a good price if you want to avoid the hassle of reformatting the drive and restoring the operating system. Here are some general hard drive problems you should start from and we'll be more specific later.

Use Operating System Utilities

First you may be able to correct those bad spots and errors from your hard drive by performing those PC maintenance in the operating system. Windows has Disk Defragment and you should run disk defragment after running Scandisk since scandisk will need to fix any problems it finds. After scanning the drive and defraging the files, run Disk Cleanup to ensure all junk files have been delete.

Check Drive cables and connections

If there is on indication that the drive is receiving power (you don't hear that familiar clicking noise or the drive light is no working) check the 4 wire connector coming from the power supply.

If the connection is secure, you can remove the power supply connector and do two things. You can check to see if there is voltage with a multimeter. But its much faster to connect another 4 wire connector to the drive to see if the drive works. There are normally extra connectors from the power supply or you can use the connection to the cdrom drive to test for voltage from the power supply.

If the connection indicates no or very little voltage (4 volts or less) from the power supply, the power supply may be going bad. Now check and double check all connections, especially if you are someone else have recently worked inside the computer.

If the drive will not boot up...?

Boot the computer with your bootable DOS disk. If you don't have one made, STOP and make one NOW by clicking on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs and Startup Disk.

Try to access drive C: by typing DIR C: and press Enter. If you see the directories on drive C: try to make the drive bootable by typing sys a: c: and press Enter. The system files should be restored and the drive may be restored to boot on its own.

If this fails, you may have to reformat and partition the drive with the setup utility that came with your drive or computer.

If the Drive boots but hangs up at boot...?

Turn the computer off, open the system unit and disconnect the ribbon cable at the motherboard end. Turn on the PC AND You will get an error message that the drive is bad and in most cases will go into your BIOS. Change the hard drive type to AUTO and shut off the computer.

Reconnect the ribbon cable and see if the hard works properly. The drive settings should be restored and should operate fine.

A hard drive that fails to boot up may also have a bad controller. If the controller is mounted on the hard drive, there is not much you can do except replace the drive.

The Best Place To Backup Your Computer

There are a few places you can pick to back up your computer, like another partition that you create on your hard drive, another hard drive that is installed inside your computer,or even a external device like a flash drive or sometimes called a thumb
drive but the best pick would be a external hard drive.

The external hard drive is the best pick, because you can get very large sizes pretty cheap and when you back it up its not likely to get corrupted, because it is not connected all the time.

There are more places to backup your computer also, like online accounts but you have to have a good running system to access the internet and Prey the connection stays put while your backup is running.

External hard drives sometimes even come with one click backup software,or you can use your own. My favourite way for a backup is doing an image with Macrium Reflect its fast and easy to use and will let you choose a external, internal or dvd or cd writables for your backup source.

Two clicks to fix most internet connection problems

When you are having connection or speed problems with your internet, whether you have a dsl modem or a cable modem all you have to do to fix most connection or speed problems is to power the unit off for a few minutes a little longer if its overheated.

The power switch is usually located in the back of the device, it can be a push button or a toggle switch, just give it a push or switch it until it goes off,it is better if you do it with your computer off.

Powering off your dsl or cable modem then powering back up before starting your computer will get you a new connection from your isp which may turn out to be a much better one.if not just re-power the dsl or cable modem again.

Some ISP Internet Service Providers call this resetting your modem, if you have any other problems call your internet providers toll free number for more assistance.

Fixing Computer Problems From Hardware

Sometimes a computer behaves rather strangely and its source is not Malware! but, driver problems instead.
Fixing these problems can be hard to pinpoint, but the way I do it is simply rule the hardware out one by one by checking the driver dates on the main hardware first then start with the major items like the video card.

Most versions of windows there is a shortcut to the device driver right click with your mouse on my computer, then click on properties then left click on hardware button then on to device manager.
Now that you are in device manager look under display adapters first, then go to the video card name then go down the menu and left click properties here you will be on the driver properties showing at top from left to right first will be the general tab then driver then details then resources, then click on driver this will show the date,if its older then a year go to the manufacturers site of the motherboard or the video card makers site.

Video cards that are the most common are ones from ATI which is owned by AMD now and Nvidia if you have either one of these go to there site to get your update, you have to select by model series say radion 4800 then you select the operating system you have try to get WHQL tested drivers these are ones that are certified to work correctly on windows o/s.

The next hardware driver that can cause strange problems is your sound card, this driver is usually built in to your motherboard unless you installed one or it had a card in it,to check look in the back of your computer if its a desktop unit and see if your speaker connection are horizontal to the backof the computer or vertical, if its vertical its on-board sound or built in so go to the motherboard manufactures site and check for driver updates.

Device manager
Network cards can cause problems also sometimes its a driver update from windows itself that causes a problem then if it is you can try rolling back your drivers to see if it fixes the issues.

Top Solutions To Your Spyware And Adware Problems

The threat of spyware and adware programs has become a widespread problem among computer users. This is one of the unwanted side effects of the online world. Just as making the world a smaller place for everybody, the Internet has brought the proliferation of malicious programs and applications that work its way into individual computers and do their damage in a variety of ways.

If you are a computer user always going online, you are not exempt to the threat of spyware and adware programs. You are always open to the possibility of being infected with such software programs that can become a hassle and a problem in more ways than one. While surfing online, you may suddenly experience a window popping up on your desktop. This can be an example of an adware.

Adware programs are actually legitimate programs that try to promote a certain product or service to online users like you. Some adware programs are relatively safe and may not do as much as to advertise a certain product in a couple of seconds or two.

But there are other adware programs that seem to  push their advertisements too far. These adware programs go as far as trying to bombard your desktop repeatedly with ads until it becomes more of a hassle instead of just trying to get your attention for a couple of seconds. Sometimes adware programs attach themselves into your own computer so that every time you use it, you might find yourself as a constant witness to their ever frustrating and distracting work slowing down your computer.

There are also other malicious programs and applications that you may unknowingly or mistakenly attached or downloaded into your computer. These spyware programs can be a problem in a number of ways. There are spyware programs that can monitor your computer use as well as your surfing habits. They can keep an eye on what Internet sites you frequent and what you usually do on your computer. This information is then being recorded and sent to someone else online who might be interested in such data.

There are also other spyware programs that can record your keystrokes and send the information to the spyware author. These recorded keystrokes will be able to provide computer hackers with a wealth of valuable information such as secret passwords, credit card numbers as well as email addresses.

This type of spyware program can make it easy for hackers to retrieve such sensitive personal information that can be used at your own expense. Other spyware programs can scan files on your hard drive secretly, attach other spyware programs into your computer, install and lock its own brand of web browser and many other malicious things.

In order for you to prevent these malicious programs from getting into your hard drive, you may need to have an anti spyware and adware program installed. An anti spyware and adware programs work by trying to block unwanted programs trying to get access into your computer.
Other ways to keep unwanted probes and other hacks to your computer is with a good firewall,
like Comodo firewall, keeping your windows up to date and staying away from peer to peer downloading sites that may have spyware attached to the downloads.

Whenever a certain malicious program tries to get its way into your computer, the anti spyware program becomes your primary weapon against such unwanted applications. Anti adware and spyware programs like Malwarebytes Anti-malware usually have a database of known malicious programs that enable them to identify spyware or adware and block them long as you are using the pro version from your computer. This useful program also has removal tools available that may help you get rid of the worst malicious spyware or adware that may have gotten through your computer in some way.

Lightning Fast and Easy Moving Files For Backup

There are many ways to move files for backup, but some of those are awkward or slow such as
lassoing, this works when you grab a group of files by clicking your left mouse button near a icon,
then go down to next icon where you want to end,be careful to not click on an icon only next to them.

You will see a line when left clicking near the first group at the top, this should follow towards the end icons, when all icons have the cowboy lasso around them just keep your left mouse button down then click the right menu,
to get your right menu to come up, then send to the folder or drive you want. If the send to menu does not have the folder or drive in the menu you can create new ones with send to toys program its free.

Right Click MenuFolder View
You can move the files by dragging to another drive but is very tricky to go where you want it to.

The easy way is to just right click all the icons after performing the cowboy lasso method, then using the send to menu to move them.

Move Your Hard Drive To Another Computer

Moving your hard drive to another computer is usually only possible if its in a external hard drive enclosure and then you can only get files from it such as media music and videos plus doc files and pictures.

But in the linux world you could move and boot your system in another computer because linux will rescan the hardware and change whats needed to run your computer. I recently had a computer mainboard die, that had an Asus mainboard with onboard graphics in it and changed it out into a case that had a gigabyte mainboard and a geforce 6100 video card and Ubuntu 11.04 operating system and just booted up and everything was detected and worked even the programs that were installed.

This is one of the many extraordinary things that makes linux unique

Tech Genius Steve Jobs Gone

Steve jobs will be missed by all, even Microsoft windows users,Linux users because we all at some point enjoyed his inventions like the Ipod or  Iphone or just Itunes the well known media center. Steve died of cancer
which  is fought with the knowledge of medical doctors  and a few procedures.

This has reminded me of the most important thing in life and that's our health, without it nothing matters.
We need to start taking more charge of are own health, for instance learning what makes us tick,I don't mean that everybody learn how to be a doctor but simply learn all you can to better your health.

It can be easy and fun to learn more about your health just try another great source is Dr Mercola free video's that will entertain and educate you on good health. Water and pure water is very important that we all overlook but is filtration good enough to take out all the bad and put in what we need.

Treatment centers that do wonders for some cancer patients Burzynsky Clinic is one of if not the best out there.

The one thing you can take that will make a difference is Pine Bark or Pycnogynol it will help you. I am not a health care doctor but am speaking of my own experience with Pine Bark and have been taking it for a few years now.

Whats The Main Part Of A Computer Anyway?

The main part of a computer goes by three different names 1- Motherboard this is called motherboard because the older units had daughter boards that were plugged into it. 2- System Board and  3-  last but not least is the
Main Board. These boards have the chipsets that run them and the processor slot that holds the cpu or the
Central Processing Unit.

On These boards you will also find your memory slots which can be SDR, DDR DDR2 or DDR3 and even DDR 4 video cards often have newer memory then computers do so a brand new video  card can be using
DDR 5.

Mainboards are probably the most common name used now. Other Slots on the mainboard are PCI, AGP ISA,PCI Express ISA is an old slot that is not used any more on modern systems, also AGP is an older slot for video and is still better far as speed then a plain PCI slot is.

The newer mainboards will have PCI Express 16 Slot or slots for video. Some mainboards have a built in video connector usually VGA or an analog signal, some have also a DVI or a digital hookup to,just make sure you have a newer lcd  monitor if you want to use this one.

The new models of mainboards may have usb 3 also which is a lot faster the usb 2. The way to tell if a desktop computer has a video card in it is look at the back if the video connection is vertical it is an onboard connection, but when the video is in the side to side  position its a video card.

Turn Your Old Hard Drive Into A External Drive

Sometimes you may have an old hard drive laying around, that may be of some use such as installing all your photos on it. To buy an external hard drive can be as much as $100 depending on the size and whether it is usb 2 or 3 or both.

There is a cheap solution to this, if you have a good old hard drive laying around. The type of hard drive, whether its a ide 2.5 inch or a sata 3.5 inch will determine what external enclosure you will need.
Sata drives come in 2.5 inch for laptops and there is the old IDE versions too. Desktop computers have 3.5 inch
IDE or the newer SATA drives.

There are many places to buy your hard drive external Enclosures such as and
The price for these external Enclosures  are extremely cheap compared to buying a external hard drive.
To install easily make sure you order the metal enclosures, these allow you to just remove a few screws and the plug in your drive, slide the case back in and replace the screws you took out before and that's all there is to it.

Look for duel units that except IDE and SATA Drives, this will make them work with most drives out there. This is a neat computer storage trick use your old drive and make your own external drive with the parts below.

How To Get Pictures From Your Phone

There are quite a few ways to get pictures from a phone camera, the number one way and the the one that is really easy is to do, is pulling them from the micro sd card, if your phone camera has one.
How to find out if your phone camera has a micro sd slot! look around the phone it may be on the top bottom or the sides, its a small slot about  3/4 of an inch wide and 9/16 long,if its not around the phone check on the inside beside the battery.

If the micro sd card slot is not beside or around the battery or around the phone you do not have one.
There are a few other ways to get pictures from your phone one being bluetooth  this way you can move pictures from your phone without wires to a device such as a kiosk like at Wal-Mart Photo department,
these kiosk accept phones that do not need a paring code, first you must  make sure bluetooth is turned on
because most phones keep it off to save power.

You can even make money with pictures you take with a camera, to find out this info and start making money from your pictures check out PaidForPictures

Then under settings select your phone to search devices, the kiosk should be set on pictures from a phone icon, when they match your pictures will show up on the screen of the kiosk you are on. If the bluetooth don't work from the kiosk its probably not compatible with your phone, newer kiosks that will be installed later will have upgraded bluetooth support for more phones. There are cables on the hp Kiosks now that allow most smart phones to be connected to get your pictures printed still go under mobile then cable you may have to repeat this step a few times make sure your phone is on your picture gallery and is set to operate as a storage device is sometimes needed also.

Another way to get pictures from your phone camera is to plug in your phone cable to your computer at home if you have one, then move the pictures to a cd burning program like record now or nero then burn the pictures to a cd. You can also move the pictures from your phone while it is plugged into your computer, to a usb thumb drive also called flash drives, then bring it in to a kosk at wall-mart or another retailer that has a photo department kiosk.

You can also bluetooth to a Friends phone that has a micro sd card in it and have them print your pictures for you. Pictures can be uploaded to sites like then printed for you, just create a free account.
Phone accessories are sometimes found in your neighbourhood retail store if not try the online website for that store.

Some speciality stores are great for items such as phone cables and batteries, mp3 player items like replacement cards and batteries on of my favourite sites besides is
there you will find a lot of hard to find accessories for your phone, camera and mp3 players there

Video and Codecs What are They Anyway?

Video Types can be confusing especially codecs! just what is a codec anyway you say,  well its video in a special state that is compressed to allow  for a smaller size  .Divx is a codec that allows for a greater quality and can put the video on a cd  but most dvd players will not play these files,
except the dvd players that are divx ready.

Codec is short for compress/Decompress to give the video a smaller size. AVI is the most common video format there is, .mov is a apple codec and there are plenty more video formats and codecs out there, like MPEG which stands for Moving Picture Experts Group a committee that sets standards for the digital encoding of movies and sound.

There are many more formats that have the MPEG name which vary in compression and speed.

High Definition Video Where and When Did It Come

HDTV or high definition television commonly refers to any video system of higher resolution than the standard definition.  The original HD specifications date back to the early 1980s, when Japan first experimented with a 1025 line television standard.

Japan presented their parameters at an international meeting of television engineers in Algiers in 1981 and Japan's NHK presented their analog HDTV system at a Swiss conference in 1983.  Except for these early formats, HDTV is digital broadcast and  therefore it's introduction will sometimes conincide with the introduction of DTV, or digital television.

The signals for high definition require a high  definition television or a computer monitor in order to be watched or viewed.  High definition video  will normally have an aspect ratio of 16:9.  The aspect ratio of the regular widescreen film that is shot today is normally 1:85:1 or 2:40:1.  The  standard type of television has a 4:3 aspect ratio.

High definition television resolution is 1080 or 720 lines.  With the contrast, regular digital television is 480 lines or 576 lines.  The current quality with DVD is not high definition, although high definition systems such as HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are both expected to be and ship later on in 2006.

The most noted feature with high definition video is the fact that it's so life like.  There is HDTV, and HD video cameras.  High definition is very  popular these days, with television being at the  top of the list.

High definition video cameras are getting just as popular, as they offer you the chance to capture memories like never before.  HD offers you video like never before, making you wonder if things are this good now - just what will video in the future actually be like?

Basic Windows Registry How It Works

The windows registry is the core of windows that keeps track of everything we do as users, and hardware, plus all the software settings, software install and uninstall and more.

There are two hidden files in the windows directory, system.dat and user.dat  system.dat keeps the settings for hardware, and the user.dat keeps all the settings for the users. there are 6 registry keys that hold your computer information and if any of these gets corrupted with the wrong info or missing info it will give you trouble sometimes only minor, then again it could keep your computer from starting up or keep it from running all together.

The 6 key areas of the registry are  1-  KEY_CLASSES_ROOT   this contains information about software settings.
2-  This registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER    This Key contains info on the person currently logged in.
3-  This registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE  This key contains info that is specific to your computer
its hardware that's installed all about your software.
4-  This registry key HKEY_USERS this key contains info about all the users of your computer and has a sub section that breaks down the users.
5-  this registry key HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG  this key points to a branch of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE  that keeps info on specific hardware on your computer.
6-  This registry key KKEY_DYN_DATA  this key points to yet another branch of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE that has specific info on hardware that is plug and play.

The registry as you can see is a very complicated section and is also delicate so the wrong changes can be disastrous. Software that is made to correctly handle changes to fix the registry are a better pick for you if you are not a highly experienced windows user.

They are free software such as Ccleaner that will help a great deal and is very safe. Another option for windows xp users you can download ERUNT  which will do a automatic save of your registry at each boot and you will be able to restore it also if something becomes corrupted. Ccleaner also gives you an option to save backups before cleaning the registry.

What things should I consider before buying the memory (RAM) for my computer?

Computers are slowly becoming an inevitable part of our life. Personal computers are becoming a source of information and entertainment. When upgrading the system, most of the computer users do some research before upgrading their system so they exactly know about a perfectly matching CPU, motherboard RAM and video card combination that will meet all their needs.

RAM is Random Access Memory that helps in improving the application speed and the overall performance of your system. Adding more RAM to a computer is one of the best, easiest, and most cost-effective upgrades a computer owner can perform. One of the quickest and easiest ways to identify the right memory modules and expansion options for your computer is to use a memory configuration tool. Like some of the other major memory manufacturers, Kingston makes a memory configuration available. You can access Kingston's memory configuration tool through their home page at kingston

The most important thing to ensure when buying memory is compatibility with your system. In addition, you'll need to decide how much memory you need and beyond that lie considerations of price, quality, availability, service, and warranty.

Compatibility of memory components with your computer system is arguably the most important factor to consider when upgrading memory. The easiest way to determine what type of memory goes with your system is to consult with your system documentation. If you need further assistance, consult a memory configuration tool available from many sources, including Kingston. Kingston and other brand-name memory companies offer such a tool to help you find the right memory configuration for your system.

With Kingston's memory configuration tool, you can search by five different criteria:

• System manufacturer/model
• Computer model name
• Memory module part number (Kingston, distributor, manufacturer)
• Specification
• Generic memory

Once you have the above information, it becomes quite easy to determine the RAM that you need for your system and is compatible with it. Each and every program installed on your computer uses RAM, and increasing the RAM capacity lets you open more files and programs simultaneously known as multitasking, while upgrading to speedier RAM boosts overall application performance, especially in computer games and multimedia-intensive applications. Thus, compared to other potential upgrades, upgrading the RAM is fairly cheap and is easy to install (no driver updates or other maintenance is required), and the enhancements are immediately noticeable.

The details that you receive from the configuration will surely help you make a right choice about the RAM you need for your system and its upgrade.

Get Rid of The Error Codes Blue SOD with Ease

For the most part, you receive an error message randomly on your PC from time to time is not the worst that can happen. Very often, your PC is just trying to say it needs time to think and could freeze for a second or two, or get the answer, Not the normal blue screen error codes, an answer very different from that of users compared to other errors, it is the panic and terror.
When the computer displays the dreaded blue screen that can be a bit of a surprise. Most people see this screen, you may not recognize that this Error is not just a factory mistake, and do what most people would. It is to apply the standard of the technical solution to restart the computer. "
In my previous office job, in fact, I gave up calling tech, when there was a freeze. I just go directly to the reset button and I wonder what people in the IT department need to do. However application errors, you may notice that it is no ok "or cancel" option to kill the blue screen message. In fact, the only option is to restart the computer.
You might think that this will solve the problem, as is usually the response to other errors. But do not be fooled by the stop error codes are not as random as believed. Usually, the cause of blue screen crash is a software or hardware failure or incompatibility. It's not something you can ignore, unfortunately, as often happens again.
Getting the Stop error code can be frustrating when you do not save what you worked the last hour for. Unfortunately, all you have worked for with the error message is lost. If you know the ins and outs of a PC, you may be able to recover the data, but not likely, if you do not know what your doing.
And now? Are you taking a PC repair shop? If data loss is so precious to you, it's not a bad idea. As for the message of the blue screen uncountable boot volume "error, you may be reassured to know that it is actually a fairly common problem. It is more commonly known as the Blue Screen of Death" or BSOD for short. Many believe, as happens to most people, there is no quick and easy fix. That's what I thought until I realized the magnitude of the code list no blue screen!
Often the problem is a registry key or faulty device driver or incompatible. Problems can occur after improper installation or upgrade hardware and software. If you're lucky, you just go revert back a device driver that was recently updated will fix the problem. You may find it strange that the updating of applications or equipment could cause problems, but the PC can be fickle beasts.
The next time you see the stop error, write down what he says. This is the key to solving the problem. Unfortunately, the message will probably be gibberish and be easier to decipher Morse code in a foreign language. The next step is to learn about this message, be it someone who calls know about computers or doing a little research.
Perhaps most times, it is a problem with a device driver or a registry key that does not usually require the help of a PC technician. Errors can be easily solved with the use of cleaning programs that can get rid of mistakes and equipment failures.
Fix blue screen error codes instant. Visit the stop error codes site.

When Computer CD drives Eject On Their Own

When a computer starts ejecting its cd or dvd drive( Hp Model Pavillion 520 N its usually a virus thats attached itself in the registry hardware profiles,or a bad drive itself or and bad IDE ribbon cable. In this case or computer, that I worked on 08-18-2011 its both I found that the drives were bad and the IDE ribbon cable, the pavillion 520m had a duel combination dvd and cd in a strange setup the first drive a cd writer was set at cable select on the jumper, the second drive was set at slave.

The way I usually set these up is with the jumpers on the back of the drive-     Master The second drive set as the slave. The ribbon cables come in 40 pin and 80 to make this short the 80 is better so I changed the 40 pin cable also with a 80.

The other strange behavior of this bad drive cable combo was when you did manage to get a cd in and try to open it under my computer it would tell  you to insert a disk although one was indeed inserted already. So when you get strange behavior like this from your computer especially if its a hp pavillion 520n It may be a computer hardware problem.

Laptop Motherboard Repair - Tips To Fix or Repair Laptop Motherboard Problems

Okay it's time to talk about motherboards. Now I get the impression that motherboards scare a lot of people in this field, you know people don't want to deal with them or replace them or try to fix them. It's a little daunting to try to diagnose the motherboard it might seem, but what I'm going tell you is it's pretty easy. Here's four main symptoms that could go wrong with the motherboard and they are:

Four symptoms of a bad motherboard:

1. Computer won't turn on
2. Components won't work
3. Computer shuts down randomly
4. Computer acts abnormally

Number one, the laptop won't power on.
Two, components in the laptop are not working malfunctioning.
Three, the computer shuts down randomly.
And four, the computer acts abnormally.

Now, we are going with these symptoms one by one. There could be more symptoms but these are the ones that I've found in my experiences. Now number one, computer won't power on. We got a laptop that doesn't power on. How can you tell if the motherboard is bad? Well, you just ask yourself why else wouldn't a computer power on? Number one, if it's on battery power, the battery is dead or the battery is bad and number two the AC adapter could be bad, so let's roll out number one.

Pull the battery out, keep the battery out of the computer for this test and then take your AC adapter and check the voltage with the voltmeter and I'm going show you how to do that right here. Take a voltmeter and what you want to test for is voltage. Put the meter at 20 volts DC and take the tip, the power jack tip. You hold your black, your negative on the outside of the tip and you put the red in the hole in the inside of the tip. Be very careful not to touch the red and the black and the tips together, otherwise it will create a short circuit. After doing these things, be sure you have 19 volts DC or just about 19 volts DC registered on your multimeter so we can know that the power adapter works. Now, just to make sure the connections is tight, kinda bend the power cord a little bit and make sure that the registered 19 volts DC on the multimeter or voltmeter will not fluctuate or move when you bend the power adapter cord a little. Okay if you're still getting 19 volts DC when bending the power adapter cord, jiggle the power adapter cord a little bit around make sure that there's no crimson wire. Now, after you bend the power adapter cord and jiggle it and you still have 19 volts registered on your multimeter, then the power adapter tip is probably good. A lot of time you know the tip will break, great in this area here, and you wouldn't get that 19 volts DC after you do that, after it's broken. So instead of just taking the whole computer apart and finding out if the laptop has appropriately good power jack, test the power adapter first.

Now another reason a motherboard might not turned on is because it's not getting power to the power jack. Power jack might be damaged, so absorb what you can from the outside and see if it's the power jack is loose or detached from the motherboard and if it is then you know you have to replace the power jack probably, but if it looks like it's secure the only way we we're gonna be able to test the power jack is to get down to the motherboard level and look it where the power jack is soldered on to the motherboard and this I cover in many of the case study videos.

Watch the case study videos for power jack repairs on the link provided below.

Other things that may cause a laptop motherboard not to power on...

Now there's a few other things that might cause a motherboard not to turn on or computer not to turn on, it could have a bad processor, but bad processor are fairly rare I would say 1 out of 75 computers are working on, it's the processor rather than the motherboard that's bad and also there's like maybe the power button on the actual laptop is broken or something mechanical like that, but again that's unlikely but you could check those things too.

2. Components won't work

Okay number two, components on a laptop won't work. For example, a CD drive or a wireless card don't show up in windows. Whether not working properly, well that could possibly be a motherboard but the way to test that is to replace that component. If your CD drive is not working replace the CD drive if it's still not working maybe the CD drive controller or the motherboard is bad. I've had that happened on a couple Toshiba laptops I worked on. I've bought a brand new CD drive put it in, still not working, still wasn't recognized by the BIOS and it was a bad motherboard. Now HP, I also had a problem of their wireless card but it wasn't the wireless cards that were bad it was the actual controller on the motherboard, that controls the card that was bad. I think it was positioned next to a chip that got real hot like the graphics chip or something like that, on the motherboard. So if you have a laptop with components not working, you replace the components and they're still not working then you might have a bad motherboard. Now how do you roll out if windows isn't causing this problem or the operating system's not causing the problem. Well, test it with a different operating systems. This is always a good test of the motherboard using like Linux distribution like knoppix or using the Ultimate Boot CD for windows. These are both bootable CD's and it's essentially testing the hardware of a laptop because you're running it on a different operating systems. Last thing to try if components aren't working and you suspect is your motherboard. Flash the bios of the motherboard, maybe the BIOS got corrupted somehow, and since the BIOS is like handles the basic functions of a computer, maybe it's not doing it's job and causing some abnormal activity in the computer.

3. Computer shuts down randomly

Okay number three, laptop shuts down randomly. Now this is a common symptom of a laptop overheating. So let's make sure it's not an overheating problem and how do we do that? Well, what I do is I take a can of compressed air and I blow it in the laptop, in the bottom where the fan is and also in the heat sink, on the side of the computer. If you do this you might see clouds of dust come out and that's a good thing that you want to make sure you get all the chunks out of the laptop before you turned it back on, because those chunks of dust that might still be stuck in there, might cause the fan blades to actually stick. I go over this in the case study videos several of them. Watch how I do that there and you can see in action you know cleaning out laptop, getting old dust out of it. Now, once you get the dust out of a laptop and you're sure that the fan is spinning and the airways are clean, if the computer keeps shutting down after this, you can be very sure that's not the CPU overheating that's causing the problem but the problem with the motherboard. I had systems where I opened them up I make sure all the airways were clean, I make sure that the heat sink was making a good connection with the processor, put it all back together and the computer still power down. It turned out it was a bad motherboard

4. Computer acts abnormally

Okay number 4, the computer or the laptop acts abnormally. It blue screens, things aren't working the way they're suppose to, it doesn't boot up every time, it doesn't boot up at all sometimes. Now, first I want to make sure it's not Windows that causing a problem. So again we're not going to deal to much for the software sides to do all your Windows fixes and make sure Windows isn't causing the problem or like I said before, just run knoppix which is a good Linux distribution, the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows which is also great and then you'll know Windows isn't the thing that's causing the problem then. If you're still having problems with the computer acting abnormally, start taking out components one by one. Take the hard drive out, you could do that if you're running it from a live Linux distribution. Take the ram out, replace the ram maybe with the stick around that you know is good that you have around in the shop, take the wireless card out take the CD drive out. Start taking components out one by one and get the motherboard down to basics like CPU, one stick of ram, motherboard and power, and hook up the screen, and just make sure that it goes on. But break it down to basics so you're sure that it's not a component that's causing the problem. So once you have it of broken down to basics and you're sure windows isn't causing the problem, then it's probably a bad motherboard. Okay it's a bad motherboard.
Now, you need to buy a motherboard. Where do I buy my motherboards? you guessed it, on eBay. Oh I love buying on eBay coz you got a great selection. You go buy from multiple sellers, usually you get the best price. Now, the way to search on eBay for motherboard is first try to get the model no. of the motherboard itself. If you can, if you have access to the motherboard you're already took the computer apart, get the model of the motherboard and research for that motherboard. If you're not at that point, then you still need to order the motherboard. You could type in the model no. of the computer you got the motherboard out of it and do a search that way. Like let's say, if it's a Compact M2000, just type on eBay Compact M2000 motherboard and do a search like that. The problem with doing a search like that though is, for example, HP's have like a DV6000 model but there's actually like a hundred different sub models in the DV6000 series and some of them have different motherboards than each other. Like say, there's a DV6310US or DV6425 so that's when you have a computer like that it's a little dangerous to search for a motherboard just by model no. of the computer alone. I've got burn on that many times myself and so it's best just to pull the motherboard out and look on the motherboard and get the model of the motherboard and do a search to buy one using the model no. of the motherboard

Now, that leads to the next question how do you get the motherboard out? Well, that's what all the case study videos show you. A lot of them bringing the laptop down the motherboard level when we're doing a repair, but before you watch the case study videos make sure you watch the video on how to take a laptop apart? Get the basics, then watch the case study videos and then you got attempt it yourself.

DVD/CD-ROM drives (Code 39 error)
At present, the player's devices are CD-ROM, DVD-ROM. The faults are caused by hardware and software kinds. Considering the mechanical is too difficult for the inexperienced, so we here just focus on software, dealing with drives' error (Code 39 error).

After loading the Windows, the DVD/CD-ROM drives work properly, but we can not see the drives in "My Computer" (System can not recognize the drives.). When try to run the drives, it shows up a notice "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code39)." Before solving this error, check the drives connection correctly, then follow the steps below:
Delete Device Manager. Most people will firstly think of Windows "Find New Hardware" when drives are missing, but it does not always work out. To fix the problem: open "My Computer"→ "Control Panel" →"System"→"Device Manager"→ "HDC(Hard Disk Controller) ", then click "Delete". Follow the note to reboot computer. After rebooting, the computer will find the Primary IDE Controller and Secondary IDE Controller again and install the drivers. Restart the computer again while the installation is completed. In this, we can get back our CD/DVD-ROM Drives.

The other way is by editing the registry to return the missing CD/DVD-ROM drives (Code 39 error.). Obviously, it is too risky to edit the registry if you are not familiar with it. To fix the error from the registry, carry out the following steps:

How to tune up Your Computers game Options For Faster Gaming speed

Generally most advanced desktop gamers would not constantly demand every single video game to give them at least 60 frames-per-second when set at its optimal configurations in 1920 x 1200 screen res. However the thing is, if even the most powerful dual or quad card set-ups still fail to speed up some of the most modern PC games with the eye candy maxed out, then obviously there have to be something wrong somewhere. So how do you tune up the more graphically demanding PC games without the need to upgrade on additional powerful hardware?

Here is a list of tips and most commonly used visual options located in today's PC games that you can start using straight away to tune up for quicker performance...

A. First of all, don't demand the earth

There are folks who run their desktops on the most modern Central processing unit and Ram, however despite the fantastic computer, these folks are barely capable to run the the most graphically demanding PC games at a reliable 60 frames per second while everything is adjusted to the "low" visual configurations. So please don't demand these hints and tips to reach an amazing alteration, however do remember that even a little increase of about 4-6 frames-per-second can make the ride a heck of a lot smoother.

B. Knowing what works plus more importantly, what doesn't

There are barely a handful of visual configurations that can reach a substantial alteration to a game's frame-per-seconds; beneath I've listed some of the more popular setting tips that you spot in today more visually demanding PC games...

C. The Post Processing configurations

This controls lots of factors for example the depth-of-field as well as motion-blur. Contrary to generally most people's belief, motion-blur doesn't create an obvious loss of frame-rates. As a matter of fact, turning it off is a giant mistake since even if the frame-rate might seem smoother the movements won't seem as slick. But turning off hit blurring as well as depth-of-field would help enhance frame-rates in graphically demanding scenes.

D. The Shadows configurations

Changing the shadow option can supply a speed increase with very nominal impact on the graphics while compared to the faster configurations. Adjusting it to poorer configurations simply turns all of the shadows effects off and putting it on quicker configurations would create soft shadowing effects that are very video card-intensive.

E. The Object Quality configurations

These option, though most of the time overlooked, affects the total, size plus quality of every single object in the game and is becoming more and more regular in today's PC games. Adjusting it to medium or lower would increase the frame-rates however there would be a decrease in the objects that come on the monitor, the far objects would not be rendered plus there is additionally an obvious draw-in meaning the 'horizon' would draw nearer than before

F. The Shader Quality configurations

This would exhibit an effect on both graphics quality and general performance more than the other configurations. Adjusting it into "medium" would most likely speed up your PC games considerably however there would be a substantial dip in the visual standard.

These commonly used visual configurations listed above are simply some of the few you can change to help expand your gaming pleasure there are lots more that can be adjusted which you can find out for yourself. Please note that these games can still be demanding and that following the these hints above would not exactly award you the desirable 60 frames-per-second however it will enhance your video game frame-per-seconds that's for sure. So try the hints and check for yourself just how much it'll change your gaming pleasure.

Computer RAMs : The Types And The Uses of Computer RAMs

Every computer comes with a certain amount of physical memory, usually referred to as main memory or RAM. You can think of main memory as an array of boxes, each of which can hold a single byte of information. A computer that has 1 megabyte of memory, therefore, can hold about 1 million bytes (or characters) of information.

Types Of RAMs And Its Uses
The type of RAM doesn't really matter but using plain old SDRAM memory might slow you down. Discussed below are the types of RAMs its uses.

FPM RAM, which stands for Fast Page Mode RAM is a type of Dynamic RAM (DRAM). The term Fast Page Mode comes from the capability of memory being able to access data that is on the same page and can be done with less latency. Most 486 and Pentium based systems from 1995 and earlier use FPM Memory.

EDO RAM, which stands for Extended Data Out RAM came out in 1995 as a new type of memory available for Pentium based systems. EDO is a modified form of FPM RAM which is commonly referred to as Hyper Page Mode. Extended Data Out refers to fact that the data output drivers on the memory module are not switched off when the memory controller removes the column address to begin the next cycle, unlike FPM RAM. Most early Penitum based systems use EDO.

SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM)
Almost all systems used to ship with 3.3 volt, 168-pin SDRAM DIMMs. SDRAM is not an extension of older EDO DRAM but a new type of DRAM altogether. SDRAM started out running at 66 MHz, while older fast page mode DRAM and EDO max out at 50 MHz. SDRAM is able to scale to 133 MHz (PC133) officially, and unofficially up to 180MHz or higher. As processors get faster, new generations of memory such as DDR and RDRAM are required to get proper performance.

DDR (Double Data Rate SDRAM)
DDR basically doubles the rate of data transfer of standard SDRAM by transferring data on the up and down tick of a clock cycle. DDR memory operating at 333MHz actually operates at 166MHz * 2 (aka PC333 / PC2700) or 133MHz*2 (PC266 / PC2100). DDR is a 2.5 volt technology that uses 184 pins in its DIMMs. It is incompatible with SDRAM physically, but uses a similar parallel bus, making it easier to implement than RDRAM, which is a different technology.

Despite it's higher price, Intel has given RDRAM it's blessing for the consumer market, and it will be the sole choice of computer memory for Intel's Pentium 4. RDRAM is a serial memory technology that arrived in three flavors, PC600, PC700, and PC800. PC800 RDRAM has double the maximum throughput of old PC100 SDRAM, but a higher latency. RDRAM designs with multiple channels, such as those in Pentium 4 motherboards, are currently at the top of the heap in memory throughput, especially when paired with PC1066 RDRAM memory.

Symptoms of hard drive failure and data loss

Know the symptoms of hard drive failure is important because a disk failure is the most common cause of data loss and information systems. If you can recognize the symptoms in advance can prepare for the expected decline in the computer system and backup your data before it is too late. In all cases of system failure and hard drive failure, you can recover your critical data with the help of recovery solutions to hard drive.
The most important thing you need to do to protect your data is the creation of regular backups. In case of system failure, you can easily restore all your lost data from a backup day. The next important thing is to identify the symptoms of failure to prepare for data loss. The following are the most common symptoms of a drive failure that can help identify the type of data loss:
PC or frozen: While working on his computer is blocked and can not do anything about it. To overcome this problem, you need to hard reset (reset button using) on your system. It could be due to infection by the virus or system files. A type of hard drive failure logic.
or missing files or partitions: When starting the computer and try to access data, it is possible that some of your important files and / or hard drive partitions are missing. The problem could be due to factors such as accidental deletion or corruption of the file system.
or the system can not detect the hard disk: If the system is unable to detect the hard drive, then the problem may be due to a failure of the disk controller or other similar reasons. Look to the category of physical data loss.
Noise or the hard disk: If the system's hard drive is what I miss demolition and clicks, then the problem may be due to a failure of the host or damage to the arm of the actuator. This problem occurs because of physical damage to the hard drive.
However, the data loss is a very critical situation, but data recovery is possible even if the hard drive is completely dead. The solution to hard drive recovery depends on the cause of failure. If you encounter logical data loss, you can set using the drive recovery tools hard. However, in case of physical damage, the recovery service is needed.
Stellar Information Systems Limited provides solutions for data recovery more important to resolve all cases of data loss. The recovery service is performed in clean rooms class -100 to experienced professionals for the server, RAID, NAS and SAN drives (SCSI, SATA, IDE and EIDE). The data recovery software are available for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, UNIX and Novell Netware.

How to increase virtual memory in Windows XP

As its name suggests, virtual memory is physical memory.
Windows uses virtual memory when you do not have enough memory "normal" physical ability to accomplish a task. When you do this, Windows uses the hard drive to store information that is usually placed in the memory or RAM.
Virtual memory is simulated RAM. Once you have exhausted all physical memory, the computer will pass data to a blank space on the hard disk. Swaps data from the hard drive of the computer and back to RAM if necessary. If you do not have much space on the hard drive on the left and you have a lot of problems, lack of virtual memory may be the reason. When Windows runs out of memory (virtual and non virtual) just does not work well.
Why bother to add more RAM to your computer when you can use hard drive space instead? Main reason - RAM is much faster. Whenever you use a lot of virtual memory, your computer is down. The best solution is to get more physical memory. The minimum requirements for an operating system Windows XP is 512 MB and 1 GB minimum for Vista. RAM prices have been reduced today with a 1GB or 2GB for your team is not that expensive yet. The more physical memory is faster processing of your computer and will be able to run multiple programs simultaneously.
How to increase virtual memory
If you are low on virtual memory, or continue to receive messages indicating that you are, you can change the default "System managed size" or "No paging file" to "Custom size" to increase your virtual memory to an acceptable level for the configuration of your host computer.
In Windows XP
1.Click the Start menu and right click on My Computer and select Properties.
2.Select the Advanced tab and select "Settings" option of return.
3.Under Performance Options window, select the "Advanced" tab and click on "Edit" in the Virtual Memory section at the bottom of the window.
4.Under virtual memory, select "Custom size" on the file size for selected drive to manually configure the memory of the virtual machine.
5.Enter the amount of virtual memory you need to put in "Initial Size" and "Maximum size". You must choose the same amount for the initial size and maximum size. This will prevent the CPU from constantly changing the paging file.
Tip: To prevent the CPU from constantly changing the paging file, set the initial and maximum size with the same value. That is, the initial size of 768 MB and 768 as the maximum size. The value must be at least 1.5 times physical RAM. For example, if your computer has 512 MB of RAM, virtual memory increase of 1.5 * 512 = 768.
6.Click Set.
When prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
In Windows Vista
1.Click the Start menu and right click on My Computer and select Properties, then click the Advanced system settings.
2.If the system properties, select the "Advanced" tab and click on "Settings" in the Performance section.
3.Under Performance Options window, select the "Advanced" tab and click on "Edit" in the Virtual Memory section at the bottom of the window.
Note: By default, Windows Vista is set to "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives." Disable this option and select Custom Size to manually configure the virtual memory on disk C.
It, 1500 MB 1500 MB initial size and also the maximum size. The value must be at least 1.5 times physical RAM. For example, if your computer has 1 GB of RAM, virtual memory increase of 1.5 * 1000 = 1500.
6.Click Set.
When prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
Tips & Warnings
Play with a gradual increase until you are satisfied with the performance of the system.
Do not give virtual memory settings below the minimum allowed. This could cause system crashes and slow.
Check "Recommended" virtual memory settings "total size of the paging file for all drives" at the bottom of the window.
